A great little book to explain the facts and future of solar power

Review Date: March 23, 2009
Reviewer: D. Fowler, Vermont
The Sun is the most important star in the universe for the people, animals and plant life here on earth. Without it we surely would not survive. There are many reasons why the sun is so very important to us! According to Tea Benduhn, the author of this book, "the use of the Sun's light and heat energy is called solar power." In this book there are four chapters:

What is Solar Power?

Sources of Energy

How Solar Power Works

Solar Power in the Future

Tea talks about many interesting facts. Did you know that there is such a thing as solar fabric and that a tent made out of it can power a computer? Did you know that there are cars that can run on solar energy? Did you know that the Sun is a renewable resource? There are many interesting facts in this book! This book is not only fun to read, but you can learn many scientific facts you may not have known before. The photographs are very interesting, especially the unusual looking solar car. This is an excellent beginner's guide to solar power.

Product Description

Demand for solar power has grown consistently by 20 to 25% per annum over the past 20 years. In the past few years this rate has actually climbed to 40%. Why? Advances in solar cells, lower costs of using solar power, unpredictable utility rates, consumer frustration with the lack of utility choices, and environmental issues have all converged to create a renewed interest in and rising demand for solar power. Over 25 states, and many more municipalities, are now offering tax and utility credits to those who use solar energy. The Complete Idiot's GuideA (R) to Solar Power for Your Home will show average readers how to generate their own electricity with solar panels. The book will cover everything short of how to physically install solar panels-something that should be left to the experts.

Good intro to solar power

Review Date: June 10, 2008
Reviewer: Futon Customer, United States
I had tried to learn about solar power online, but quickly got lost by wattage, amperes, voltage, batteries, inverters, etc. Then I purchased this book, and it cleared it all up for me! I wish I had just picked the book up first. It was a great intro to solar power (and it also covers solar heating, passive solar, solar landscaping, and even a little on wind and water power too). Highly recommended for those needing an introduction!
for 3 yr olds only

This book was a complete waste of money and covered vague basic facts about solar. Not for any body wanting to learn do it your self installs or solar applications. I learned more in elementary school about solar power than this book had in it. A complete waste. Guess I am an idiot for buying it.
Ok...but most of the information can be found for free....

Reviewer: Peter Feige, Charlotte, NC United States
I was really hoping this book would have a little bit mor "meat" to it, but unfortunantly, it merely repeated all the information I found doing free web searches. What I was looking for was a more nuts and bolts book and this is a very generic overview. For example, the chapter on installing solar panels is only 4 pages long and has no diagrams or actual installation tips. The chapter only said to consult a reputable electrician. Um, I kinda already knew that.....
Good Introduction

This is a good introduction into solar technology for the home. The problem is that this technology is changing so rapidly that any book is quickly out of date.

12 volt, simple, but....

Review Date: July 5, 2008
Reviewer: Amanda Peck, Waynesboro
If you can do it happily, 12v is the simplest and cheapest way to go.

Happily?

Well, I was looking at water pump situation a few years ago, and it was probable that it would be cheaper to go from 12v at the solar panel to 120 in the wire, and then, if I had to HAD TO have that 12v pump, back to 12 volt at the pump.

Gack!

The problem is wire size. Distances you don't have to think much about if you have 120AC--10 gauge extension cords are more expensive than 14 gauge, but nothing like having to buy a hundred feet of something the size of automotive starter cable--one each way.

That said, lights, anything rechargeable, anything whose native voltage is 12v DC (or that come with a cord to recharge in the car)--like a lot of radios, laptops, small stereos, even fair-sized TVs, are fair game. There are refrigerators that run on 12 volt--small, intended for the car and so probably serious power gobblers, annoying but very low-power chest refrigerators (Sundanzer), and some high-dollar two-door "all the comforts of home" ones (SunFrost). The Sundanzer might, depending on how much sun you get, on a 75 watt panel.

The book gives more ideas, like using a rechargeable motor from a 12v drill to power a sewing machine. And seems to think that an automotive battery isn't a bad first step. People in the US tend to run towards us screaming, "no, no, that's a really horrible idea."

One of my heroes, Ben Law, has been 12 volt only for years. He wrote the introduction to the book. And there was a guy in Texas with a now defunct newsletter who was promoting it (and methane), [...]

Solar Power for Your Home
by David Hughes et al. Alpha Publishers 2010

Reviewed by: Dr. Joseph S. Maresca

This is an excellent guide for anyone planning to install
solar energy panels in a home or take advantage of the sale
of excess renewable power to the local electric company .
The work describes solar power functionality
and solar energy at work. The processes described are perfect
for communities and third world countries operating without
public utilities.

The process has a solar energy module consisting of a
charge controller, battery with an offshoot to a DC load
or AC load and an inverter for the AC load.
The payback for the solar system is through a federal tax
credit, solar rebates, selling power to the local utilities
or renewable energy credits.

There are several big initiatives going on right now like
the Million Solar Roofs Initiative. The American Recovery
Reinvestment Act is responsible for solar energy promotion
on federal buildings. Solar energy may be financed
through consumer loans, a 1st or 2nd mortgage, as well as
special federal programs like Title I loans.
Fannie Mae has a REEIL loan program.

Prebuilt solar homes are advertised at greenhomesforsale.
There are alternate solar panel designs like the solar panel
rack mounted at ground level.
Designers of solar systems must take into consideration
the sun's noontime height above the horizon and the seasonal
changes involving the sun repositioning. Solar panels
may be installed on a garage roof instead of the roof
of the home.

A residential solar system can cost $30T to $40T or $6 to $8.
per watt. Batteries may be needed for backup systems.
Inverters change DC to AC electricity. Air warmed in the
sunspace travels on its own throughout the home. Wing wells can
accelerate the natural breeze in the interior.

Both individuals and businesses generate excess renewable
energy which can be sold to the community as an additional revenue
source. The National Electric Code (NEC)for residential solar
power governs installations under Article 690. Homeowners must
remember to obtain adequate insurance coverage for the solar
installation and any customizations. The volume has an excellent
appendix with extensive drawings throughout and a section on
Energy Efficiency Resources throughout the USA.

This book would be an excellent acquisition for anyone
planning to build or implement solar energy panels on a
residential or industrial property. The cost of the
acquisition is modest at under $20.00. The book is recommended
highly to the readership.
Way too much of a general overview to be useful

This book contains very little actionable information for people who want to begin installing a basic solar power system. If you've never heard of solar power, then this book will provide a bird's eye view of the concepts involved. However, if you want to learn the basics AND obtain enough information to wire a couple of panels, a couple of batteries, and add the controller and inverter to the system, then you better look elsewhere because you are not going to find that level of detail in this book. If you've ever seen a television show about solar powered homes, then you have no need to read this book.

Not much in here you wouldn't already know from just watching TV. It does go on to say that mounting a wind generator to the roof of a house is creates a lot of noise. That's all I got out of it. I guess if you know nothing about solar power its worth a few bucks.

Looking deeper helps.

Review Date: July 27, 2010
Reviewer: Barry Johnston,
A great book as far as it goes, but working for a solar supplier (PV and thermal) here is one area which probably merits deeper exploration. This is the answer to the old chestnut question, which is: "How long does it take before I reach energy payback on my solar installation". While this is often addressed where the baseline is money, for a green technology the environmental baseline is at least as important. Our research suggests that the answer is:

PV installations - 5-7 years.
Complex solar thermal systems (low carbon mains electric pumps) - over 4 years.
Zero carbon, simple solar thermal systems (thermosyphon or PV pumped such as Solartwin) - 2 years or less.

The risk is that the "techno-bling" or "eco-bling" appeal of complex technologies can sometimes outsmart the environmental appeal of simpler technologies. Or insulating. Or using less heat in the first place!

regarding todays technology and this book.

Reviewer: Jesse E. Shaw,
SORRY, I COULDN'T FIND THE "SPELL CHECK" FIRST THE PENCIL THEN THE TYPWRITER AND NOW THE COMPUTER WITHOUT SPELL CHECK KEEPS MAKING MISTAKES.

THIS BOOK IS A GOOD STARTING PLACE TO LEARN THE TERMINOLOGY AND GLEAN IDEAS FOR SERIOUS, "BEFORE YOU BUY ANYTHING" STUDY.
I RECOMMEND BUYING IN ADDITION OTHER BOOKS AS LONG AS THEY HAVE AN INITIAL PUBLICATION DATE OF 2010 OR 11 NEXT YEAR ETC.

DO NOT BUY A NEW BOOK ON TECHNOLOGY THAT IS EXPANDING LIKE A NUCLEAR EXPLOSION UNLESS IT IS FIRST EDITION CURRENT YEAR.

(TV SETS 5 YEARS AGO LO DEF PLASMA 2 YEARS AGO CHEAPER PLASMA AND LCD 1 YEAR AGO HIDEF LCD THIS 2010 HIDEF AND 3D AND NOW 4 COLOR TECHNOLOGY. ACCORDING TO THE ADVERTISING AS LAST MONTH.)

WHEN YOU BUY ANYTHING THAT USES ELECTRICITY TAKE THE TIME TO DETERMING ESTIMATED KWH AVERAGE AT 70 DEGREES F. UNLESS OF COURSE MONEY DOES NOT MATTER.

IN THE VERY NEAR FUTURE WITH THE CURRENT THINKING OF THE GOVERNMENT AFTER NOVEMBER 2006 YOU ARE GOING TO BE PENALIZED FOR HAVING POWER HUNGRY APPLIANCES.
(THEY ALREADY GOUGE YOU ON YOUR INEFFICIENT AUTOMOBILE CLASSES AS A GUZZLER).

HOWEVER,,,
THERE ARE TWO AREAS OF CONCERN WHEN IT COMES TO SOLAR POWER CHOICES.

FOLKS WITH NO MONEY AND NO PHYSICAL ACCESS TO MATERIAL
FOLKS WITH GOBS OF MONEY AND ARE WILLING TO SPEND IT WISELY.

FOLKS LIKE A CERTAIN NOBEL PRIZE WINNER WHO HAS THE LARGEST SINGLE FAMILY ELECTRIC BILL IN THE NATION AND THE MILLIONS TO PAY IT WOULD NOT NEED THIS BOOK.

THIS BOOK IS IN-BETWEEN BUT MORE TOWARD THE TOP OF THE RANGE OF NEED.
PROBABLY A 7 OF 10 IF YOU NEED A REFERENCE POINT.

SOLAR ELECTRIC IS GOING FORWARD SO FAST IT IS AMAZING BUT UNFORTUNATELY THE COST IS ALSO GOING AHEAD AT THE SAME SPEED LIKE THE CARROT IN FRONT OF THE MULE.

ACTUALLY THE SOLAR ELECTRIC COST IS GOING UP FASTER THAN THE SAVINGS. BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING CHECK THE BOTTOM LINE WHEN COMPARING THE COST OF THE PAID FOR SOLAR ELECTRIC SYSTEM AT THE END OF IT'S GUARANTEED LIFE TO THE COST OF THE ELECTRICITY YOU DID NOT USE. KEEP IN MIND THAT YOU WILL BE BILLED FOR THE PAPERWORK EACH MONTH REGARDLESS OF HOW MUCH YOU USE.
ASK THE ELECTRIC COMPANY HOW MUCH YOU ARE PAYING PER KWH BASED ON 500 PER MONTH OR WHATEVER YOU HAVE BEEN USING. THEN DIVIDE YOUR CONSUMPTION INTO YOUR ACTUAL BILL IN PENNIES (MATH BECOMES COMPLICATED OTHERWISE) AFTER BEING PREPARED FOR A SHOCK.
I PAY $36 FOR THE FIRST THOUSAND GALLONS OF WATER I USE. THE ACTUAL WATER IS MORE LIKE $1.25 BUT THE ADD-ONS HAVE ME FOR LUNCH.

AVERAGE WAGE IN JAPAN IS AROUND $60,000 USD WHICH IS WAY AHEAD OF AVERAGE U.S. WAGES, AND STILL THE JAPANESE PEOPLE SPEND ALL THEY MAKE JUST TO LIVE. THIS IS THE SAME FOR ANYBODY NOT LIVING ON A TECHNOLOGY EXPLOSION CURVE.

THOSE FOLKS WHO HAVE TIME TO READ AND STUDY THIS BOOK ARE NOT LIVING ON THE EXPLOSIVE CURVE AND DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO INVEST IN A SYSTEM THAT WILL TAKE 30 YEARS TO PAY FOR IT'S SELF.

THERE ARE THOSE WHO DO ACTUALLY INSTALL SOLAR ELECTRIC BECAUSE THEY MUST.
PEOPLE LIVING A 3000 FEET DOWN A 30 DEGREE HILL FROM THE GRID NEED SIXTEEN POLES AT $8000 A POLE JUST TO GET ELECTRICITY. THIS IS $128,000 JUST FOR THE POLES. SOLAR ELECTRIC AND WATER LOOKS VERY GOOD THEM.

YOU CAN BUILD A SOLAR ELECTRIC SYSTEM FOR A THIRD OF THE ELECTRIC COMPANYS POLES COST IN THE CASE ABOVE AND BE IN ELECTRIC SERVICE IN A WEEK AFTER THE JOB STARTS. FIGURE HOW MUCH YOU NEED AND THEN DOUBLE IT FOR PRACTICALITY.

I KNOW ABOUT THE ABOVE BECAUSE ONE OF MY FRIENDS IS IN THIS SITUATION, AND FOR 10 YEARS HAS LISTENED TO PROMISES FROM THE ELECTRIC COMPANY GO UNFULFILLED. AFTER 10 YEARS OF GENERATOR POWER HE BORROWED THE MONEY AND CONTRACTED THE SOLAR ELECTRIC SYSTEM. HE DID NOT READ A BOOK BUT INSTEAD WENT TO A SYMPOSIUM HELD BY THE SALES ORGANIZATION. THE BOOK IS OF NO VALUE TO THE NON TECHNICIAN EXCEPT FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF LEARNING WHAT THE WORDS AND NUMBERS MEAN.

THIS SAME PERSON IN THE PARAGRAPH ABOVE BOUGHT A SOLAR WATER HEATER SYSTEM WHICH HAS NO MOVING PARTS WITH THE TANK MOUNTED AS PART OF THE PANEL. (NO ELECTRIC FOR A PUMP) AGAIN HE DID NOT READ A BOOK AND HAD THE SOLAR SALES GUY CONTRACT THE INSTALLATION. IT WAS NOT THE BEST CHOICE OF PLUMBING ARANGMENT (I SERVICE FIVE DIFFERENT BRANDS OF HOT WATER SYSTEMS) AND IT HAD PROBLEMS THAT I WAS ABLE TO EASILY FIX BY DOING THE CORRECT ROUTING AND PLUMBING TO MAKE IT RELIABLY DO WHAT WAS EXPECTED OF IT.
THIS SOLAR HOT WATER SYSTEM PAID FOR IT'S SELF IN VERY SHORT ORDER. HIS PREVIOUS HEAT CAME FROM PROPANE TANKS HE HAULED TO THE PROPANE STORE TO BE FILLED. IN HAWAII ENERGY IS SOLD BY THE BTU WHETHER IT IS GASOLINE DIESEL, PROPANE, OR ELECTRICITY. YOU PAY FOR THE ENERGY YOU USE AND NO SYSTEM PROPERLY USED IS CHEAPER THAN ANY OTHER.

THINK OF THIS.
ALL WATER HEATERS AND STORAGE TANKS LOOSE ENERGY THROUGH THE SHELL. SOME ARE BETTER THAN OTHERS,, A LOT BETTER. GAS HEATERS ALSO LOOSE ENERGY THAT GOES OUT THE CHIMNEY (DON'T BURN YOUR FINGERS TESTING THIS).

(YOU WOULD BE AMAZED AT HOW MANY HOUSES AND CONDOS HAVE STRANGE PLUMBING RESULTS DUE TO SIMPLE ERRORS)
IMAGINE THE NEXT DOOR CONDO USING YOUR HOT WATER. CONDOS ARE USUALLY FLIPFLOPPED BR TO BR KIT TO KIT. STUFF HAPPENS.
I DISCOVERED THIS 40 YEARS AGO WHEN AN OWNER SUDDENLY HAD NO HOT WATER IN THE BATH BUT DID HAVE IT EVERYWHERE ELSE. I FOUND THE ELECTRIC BEING OFF NEXT DOOR WAS THE KEY TO SOLVING THE PROBLEM. THE BATH HOT WATER WAS SWITCHED. (IN CONDOS THE COLD WATER IS PROVIDED UNMETERED IN VERTICAL STACKS FOR TWO ADJACENT APARTMENTS) SWITCHING COLD PIPES IS INCONSEQUENTIAL UNTIL YOU TRY TO SHUT THE WATER OFF AND THE MISPLUMB IS INVOLVED
(ALL WATER FOR ONE CONDO UNIT IS TERMINATED AT ONE PLACE NEAR THE KITCHEN IN MOST CASES).
ANOTHER TIME I FOUND THE ELECTRIC FOR TWO (WALL COMMON) HEATERS WERE SWITCHED. THE OWNERS WERE PAYING EACH OTHERS BILL. ONE GUY KEPT TRYING TO CONSERVE AND THE OTHER GUYS BILL KEPT GOING DOWN SO HE DID NOT CARE ABOUT USAGE.

SOME FOLKS THINK THAT A PLUMBING INSPECTORS JOB IS TO MAKE CERTAIN THE SYSTEM IS SAFE AND WILL WORK PROPERLY. THE "SAFE" PART PROBABLY,,, BUT WORK PROPERLY IS NOT NECESSESSARILY GOING TO HAPPEN. THE FIRST CHALLENGE TO THE PLUMBING AND ELECTRIC INSPECTOR IS TO COUNT THE FIXTURES TO SEE IF THE QUANTITY MATCHES THE APPROVED PERMIT. TOO MANY OR TOO FEW WILL BE CAUGHT BY THE INSPECTOR. PERMITS PRICING IS BASED ON ESTIMATED COST AND NUMBER OF TERMINATIONS.
SOME REALISTIC REASONING IS ALSO APPLIED BUT VERY LOOSELY.
CODES MUST BE MET WHERE SAFETY IS INVOLVED SUCH AS TERMINATING THE T&P VALVE OUTSIDE OF A LIVING SPACE AND PROPER GROUNDING PRACTICES. THE T&P OF A SOLAR HEATER PANEL IS RARELY BROUGHT DOWN TO A PROPER DRAIN OR SAFE AT GROUND LEVEL VENT. (STEAM FROM A PANEL THROUGH A 3/4 INCH PIPE CAN AND WILL BE OVER 300 DEGREES AND WILL DESTROY ROOFING AND PLASTIC GUTTERS IN SECONDS. (LIKE A CHEAP PLASIC CAN IN YOUR DISHWASHER)

(THAT STRANGE OFF-COLOR YOU SEE NEAR ONE END OF A SOLAR WATER PANEL IS NOT FROM STUFF IN THE TAP WATER, IT IS FROM SUPER HEATED WATER THAT IS INSTANTLY BROUGHT TO BOIL WHEN THE PRESSURE IS RELEASED AND BLEW OFF TO CORRECT THE OVERHEAT WHEN THE PUMP ELECTRIC OR THE PUMP IT'S SELF FAILED.
ANYBODY IN THE PATH OF IT IS GOING TO BE SEVERELY BURNED,
(YET IT MEETS CODE).

KEEP IN MIND THAT IF YOU DEPEND ON REDDY KILOWATT TO POWER THE SOLAR SYSTEMS WATER PUMP AND FOR ANY REASON THE POWER GOES OFF THE SUN DOESN'T.
YOU HAVE TWO CHOICES AT THAT TIME.
1. COVER THE PANELS WITH A SILVER TARP.
2. ACCEPT THE DAMAGE THAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN WHEN THE PANEL TRIPS THE TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE VALVE AFTER YOU TURN OFF YOUR WATER AND RELEASE THE CITY PRESSURE LEAVING THE HOT TAP OPEN SO THE STEAM WILL GO INTO YOUR NON PLASTIC SINK OR TUB.
(THAT PLASTIC DRAIN PLUMBING WILL NOT DO WELL IN 180 DEGREE, OR HOTTER, WATER) YOU CAN TEST THIS BY RUNNING A P TRAP THOUGH A DISHWASHER CYCLE IN THE BOTTOM RACK.
(SOME DISPOSERS WILL BE DAMAGED BY SUPER HOT WATER). THIS HAPPENS MORE OFTEN THAN YOU WOULD IMAGINE
(I SERVICED ISE BRAND FOR 40 YEARS AND SOME HAD PLASTIC PANES IN THEM THAT WOULD DEFORM WITH 180 DEGREE TAP WATER AFTER TEN OR MORE MINUTES).

IN HAWAII GROUNDING IS A JOKE BUT THE CODE IS MET ANYWAY. GROUNDING CODES ARE BASED ON ORGANIC SOIL WHICH IS THE RESULT OF A MILLION YEARS OF MOTHER NATURE DOING HER THING. SOME CODES REQUIRE SOIL CONDUCTIVITY TESTING AND SOIL ADDITIVES ARE NECESSARY (THIS WORKS WIHT ORGANIC SOIL)
HAWAII DOES NOT HAVE ORGANIC SOIL. YOU CAN PICK MY FARM SOIL UP WITH A MAGNET.

NOT EVERYTHING IS WHAT IT SEEMS AND YOU HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION.
Pass on this

Wind Power for Dummies A Review by Paul Gipe

Review Date: April 19, 2010
Reviewer: Paul B. Gipe, Bakersfield, CA
April 16, 2010

Wind Power for Dummies by Ian Woofenden is the mass-market, mainstream book on small wind turbines that the industry has long sought as a measure of respectability. Small wind has arrived when the wildly popular Dummies' series takes up the topic. Dummies books, and this one will be no exception, are the kind that one finds shelves of when entering Barnes & Nobles, America's big box book store. Small wind has indeed arrived.

Woofenden, a long-time editor at Home Power Magazine, fortunately doesn't fall for the temptation posed by his entry into big-league publishing and sugar coat the technology. This is a real book by a real author who lives, breathes, and writes about the subject. He doesn't pull any punches.

As an outspoken proponent of safety around wind turbines-of any size-I found Woofenden's Dummy book particularly valuable because of its emphasis on safety. This is a topic that other writers often shy away from. Woofenden tackles the delicate subject head on and with good humor to boot.

Woofenden, a professional arborist, offers sage advice when he recommends that all towers have a full-time, fall-arrest system in place. He says he simply won't climb a tower without one present. That's about as clear a statement as a writer can make. But his statement is more significant than that. Woofenden is stepping out from the norm of his small wind brethren by calling for fall-arrest systems in an industry that has widely ignored these devices in the USA for nearly 30 years.

Disclosure: Woofenden applauds my work in the acknowledgements section of the book--for which I am grateful. A pat on the back is always welcome.

As in other Dummies books and certainly as found in the pages of Home Power Magazine, Woofenden uses homespun aphorism to drive home his point. One such example is his advice about "thinking before you act".

"Wearing a hard had doesn't mean a lot if you don't have much to protect in the first place. Your number one piece of safety gear is on your shoulders. You need brains, determination, knowledge, and experience to be safe."

More sound advice in his recommendation to use "baby talk" when working on a tower. "Before I do something, I say what I'm going to do: 'I'm going to move my lanyard up above these rungs next; I'll need you to lift your right foot'," he explains in another passage.

"Ten Wind-Energy Mistakes," like safety, is another valuable Woofenden contribution to the literature on small wind. Harking back to his mentor Mick Sagrillo, one of Woofenden's top ten mistakes is "Using too Short a Tower".

Woofenden will not endear himself to "inventors," crackpots, and hustlers when he warns readers against using "creative" wind turbine designs. These are the wacky ideas that appear regularly on the Internet and no doubt drive serious editors, such as Woofenden, batty answering each new wave of queries from the true believers.

Wind Power was constrained by the format of the successful Dummies' series. The books, which became famous for deciphering the usage of computer software, use few graphics. Wind energy is a very visible technology and there are a myriad designs and as many different applications that call out for photos or illustrations. The illustrations used are simple, clear, and straightforward-the hallmark of Home Power Magazine. The graphic illustrating the "basic parts of a turbine" is particularly good.

And it's hard to beat the humorous comics that were part of the Dummies' books recipe for success. If anything, the book could have used more of them.

A minor quibble is Wind Power For Dummies' reliance on the English system of measurements-a system that the English themselves don't use. It's understandable in the context. The Dummies books are targeted toward the mass market in the US and that leaves out the Canadians and anyone else who uses the metric system.

With the Dummies' marketing prowess at his back, Woofenden stands a good chance of taking his message of caution and thoroughness in developing a safe, productive, and profitable small wind turbine installation to a bigger market than other small wind books have done before.

For only $22, the book is not only a steal but a welcome addition to the wind power library.

Wind Power for Dummies by Ian Woofenden, John Wiley & Sons, 2009, paper, 384 pages, US $21.99, ISBN: 978-0-470-49637-4.

Excellent.

Reviewer: David Stebbins,
If you're looking for a resource that covers most everything about residential size wind generators, this book is as good as anything you'll find. It has chapters on how to figure how much wind you have at your site, wind generator types, towers and how to erect them, legal issues, costs and how long it will take for your generator to pay for itself. The use of wind for off-grid and grid tied applications are compared. Maintenance and safety are covered in great detail. In fact, after you read the safety chapter you may decide that wind is not for you. If that's the case, you're in luck, there's a whole chapter on alternatives to wind: photovoltaics, hydro and solar thermal. A chapter on home energy conservation is also included. The amount of information can be overwhelming, but the author does a good job of tying it all together.
The author, Ian Woofendan, has been writing articles on wind and renewable energy for Home Power magazine for many years, and has wind and solar power at his own home. He has a lot of practical, hands-on knowledge that is evident in WPFD.
I've lived with small scale wind over ten years, and I know of only two other books this comprehensive that are oriented towards home-sized systems:
1) Power From the Wind (incidentally co-authored by the author of Wind Power For Dummies), Dan Chiras. This book is excellent, and in many ways equal in scope to WPFD. It runs about 250 pages.
2) Wind Power (Paul Gipe). Very good, but really technical, and includes a lot of information about very large commercial sized generators. 500 pages long!
If I had to get a single book on small scale wind power, Wind Power For Dummies would be my first choice, followed by #1 and then #2.
It also happens to be the cheapest of the three.
Dummies books good as usual.
